Becoming a Patent Attorney is to enter a respected profession that offers a rewarding mix of science, technology and law. The profession is particularly attractive to those wishing to retain their interest in science and technology while applying it more widely in a legal context.

Make no mistake, training to become a Patent Attorney is difficult, entailing a series of demanding examinations. To help you tackle these, you will receive training and support, through external courses, in-house tutorials and daily contact with experienced colleagues. The end result is a world-class qualification and a stimulating, well remunerated career.

Trainee Patent Attorney / Technical Assistant - (Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics)

We are accepting applications for Trainee Patent Attorney / Technical Assistant positions (commencing in September 2018), within Maucher Jenkins well established Patents team based in our Surrey office (or London office, if candidate prefers), with a background in Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Physics.

The right candidate will be a self-starter who likes working as part of a team; they will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to work effectively with our national and international client base; they will have strong time management and organisational skills; and will be able to demonstrate dedication to providing excellence to our clients.

Due to the high academic requirements for this opportunity, only graduates with at least upper second-class honours will be considered. Although not essential, research or industrial experience is preferred. We are also keen to hear from candidates with Chinese or German language skills.

All necessary training will be provided to lead to full qualification as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney. We offer a competitive salary and attractive bonus scheme.

Associate Patent Attorney (Part or fully qualified)

The right candidate will have intellectual ability and professionalism; they will be hard working, driven and agile. The right candidate will be proactive and highly organised with excellent attention to detail.  If you are part qualified, we will provide comprehensive training and support towards achieving full qualification as a Chartered Patent Attorney or European Patent Attorney, as appropriate.  We will support you to acquire and develop the skills necessary to qualify and succeed as a Patent Attorney with us.

As a Patent Attorney, your duties will include meeting inventors, reviewing new inventions, drafting and advising on patent applications, responding to patent examiners, attending hearings and advising on other intellectual property matters. Your role will also involve supporting trainee patent attorneys and business development activities.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have completed all relevant examinations (and registration) as a Chartered Patent Attorney (UK/CPA) and/or European Qualified Patent Attorney (EPA);
  • Have excellent academics, including not less than a 2:1 in a relevant STEM subject (science, technology, engineering or mathematics);
  • Have relevant post-graduate study/research in a telecommunications, communications or engineering related subject or experience in a relevant industry;
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills; fluent English;
  • Have excellent written and oral Mandarin language skills (as this role will work closely with our colleagues and clients in China); and
  • Be able to demonstrate initiative and work independently.

A new opportunity has arisen within our thriving Trade Marks Group based in our London office for a Legal Billing Clerk.

The purpose of the role is to work with the Partners, fee earners and support team of the Trade Marks Group, to ensure the timely preparation of and distribution of client invoices.

The role will entail a full range of billing activities including preparing and issuing accurate client invoices including using electronic billing systems, documenting client requirements, preparing and maintaining invoice templates, maintaining records, sharing knowledge and, where possible, improving internal processes.

The right candidate will have excellent organisation, time management and communication skills; they will possess a strong eye for detail with the ability to meet multiple deadlines; and will have a professional and positive attitude with excellent customer service skills. A degree of flexibility is also required as the right candidate will be required to provide administration/secretarial support, as needed.

Experience working in a professional services/office environment and legal billing/invoicing experience, as well as sound knowledge of MS packages including Word, Excel and Outlook, is essential for this role.
