Becoming a Patent Attorney is to enter a respected profession that offers a rewarding mix of science, technology and law. The profession is particularly attractive to those wishing to retain their interest in science and technology while applying it more widely in a legal context.

Make no mistake, training to become a Patent Attorney is difficult, entailing a series of demanding examinations. Trainee patent attorney / Technical Assistant (wireless communications and electrical engineering)

Due to our exciting expansion plans, Maucher Jenkins is looking for an ambitious graduate Trainee Patent Attorney / Technical Assistant to join our patents group to support our continued growth in the UK and China.

If you have a minimum of an upper second class electronics, communications or electro-engineering based degree, with relevant post-graduate research or industry experience, and are looking for your next challenge, why not become a Patent Attorney with Maucher Jenkins!

At Maucher Jenkins, working with a dynamic and forward thinking team of experts, we will train and support you towards achieving full qualification as a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney.  We understand that becoming a Patent Attorney is very challenging and we will provide comprehensive support for our trainees sitting exams including in-house tutorials and external courses and lectures.  We will support you to acquire and develop the skills necessary to qualify and succeed as a Patent Attorney with us.

As a Trainee Patent Attorney / Technical Assistant, working with your supervisor, your duties will include meeting inventors, reviewing new inventions, drafting and advising on patent applications, responding to patent examiners, attending hearings and advising on other intellectual property matters.

The right candidate will:

  • Have excellent academics including A level (or equivalent) Physics and Maths.

  • Not less than a 2:1 in electronics, electronic engineering, physics or telecommunications under-graduate degree.

  • Have relevant post-graduate study/research or relevant experience in telecommunications.

  • Have strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Have excellent written and verbal Mandarin language skills (as this role will work closely with our colleagues and clients in China).

  • Be able to demonstrate initiative and work independently.

Location: London or Farnham. Salary: Competitive, plus benefits.

We are seeking graduate entrants with a background in Communications Engineering, Electronic Engineering, or Physics. New graduates will initially be based in our London office, but may have the option to move to our Farnham office. Additionally, for candidates with good German, a placement in our Munich office may also be possible.

Candidates should have a relevant degree with at least upper second-class honours. They must be able to write in clear and concise English. Candidates should have the commitment and drive to deliver excellent client service, whilst studying for and passing professional examinations.

Associate / Senior Associate Solicitor (trade marks)
